What Types of Insurance Coverage Does Travelers Offer?

As a large property and casualty insurance company, Travelers offers many types of insurance products for individuals and businesses. Here are some of the types of insurance coverage available for individuals:

  • Auto Insurance—Coverage to protect you from financial loss related to car accidents or other claims such as theft. Travelers offers liability coverage, collision coverage, and more. They also offer roadside assistance to help you if you’re stranded, and “gap insurance” that will cover the difference between what you still owe on a car and the actual cash value of your car if your vehicle is totaled in an accident.
  • Home Insurance—Travelers offers homeowners insurance policies that will protect you from financial losses if your home is damaged by a covered peril. Homeowners insurance typically covers the structure of your home, and any other buildings (such as garages or garden sheds) on the property. It also covers your personal belongings. (Valuable items need to be insured separately, see “valuable item coverage” below.)
  • Condominium Insurance—Similar to homeowners insurance, condo insurance protects your personal property and offers liability coverage, separate from what your condo association insurance covers.
  • Renters Insurance—Travelers renters insurance protects you from financial loss if your personal property is damaged in a covered event, such as a fire in your apartment.
  • Umbrella Coverage—Travelers umbrella coverage offers additional liability protection over and above the limits in your standard homeowners or auto insurance policies.
  • Boat/Yacht Insurance—Travelers offers boat insurance that will protect you from losses associated with damage to your boat from an accident or covered event. Additionally, similar to car insurance, boat insurance with liability coverage will protect you against losses if someone is injured on your boat.
  • Motorcycle Insurance—Having motorcycle insurance coverage is required in some states, and it’s a good idea to have both liability coverage and collision coverage. Travelers offers collision, comprehensive, and bodily injury coverage as part of its motorcycle insurance coverage.
  • Travel Insurance—Travelers started out as a company that protected people from accidents that happened while they were traveling, so it’s no surprise that they continue to offer travel insurance. Travel insurance protects you from a wide range of possible losses that can happen when you are on a trip, such as medical expenses, trip cancellation, inclement weather, or even things like lost luggage.
  • Valuable Item Coverage—If your personal property includes items of high value, such as expensive electronics, cameras, or jewelry, the personal property insurance coverage that comes with your home, condo, or renter’s insurance policy might not be enough. These items should be covered with an additional policy, called valuable item coverage.
  • Pet Insurance—Travelers offers insurance coverage for your pets, too. As veterinary care has advanced, costs have risen. Travelers pet insurance means financial protection for you if your pet needs expensive care.
  • Landlord Insurance—Travelers offers landlord insurance for property owners with 1-4 rental units, that will protect you from the special risks associated with being a landlord.
  • Wedding and Event Coverage—Weddings are special events, and ones that can come with substantial investments of time and money. Travelers offers event coverage that can protect you from financial losses from covered events, such as extreme weather, or if a key vendor—such as your caterer or photographer—doesn’t show up.

Does Travelers Insurance Offer Discounts?

Everyone wants to save money on their insurance premiums, so discounts are top-of-mind for most customers. As a large insurance company with a wide range of product offerings, one of the easiest ways to save on Travelers Insurance is by bundling coverage.

If you have more than one type of property insured, such as your home and your auto, you could save money on your premiums by “bundling” your insurance with Travelers. If you have additional lines of insurance—such as more than one car, a boat, and valuable personal property—you could save even more.

Travelers Insurance does offer other ways to save on insurance premiums. If you have an auto insurance policy, you can save money on your premium by being a safe driver. If you have drivers in the household who are fully enrolled in high school or college, Travelers offers a good student discount for drivers with good grades. By maintaining a “B” average or better, your student may qualify for this discount on car insurance.

Homeowners can save money too, by installing certain preventative systems such as smoke detectors and fire alarms, security and “smart home” systems, and sprinklers.

History of Travelers Insurance

Travelers is a top-10 writer of personal insurance lines in the US, and is the top writer of worker’s compensation insurance. They are also a top-5 writer of commercial insurance lines in 45 states and Washington, DC.

Travelers Insurance has been around for more than 165 years, and was established in Hartford, CT by James G. Batterson, who served as the president of Travelers from 1864-1901. The company’s distinctive red umbrella was adopted as the official logo in 1959.

In 2004, Travelers merged with St. Paul Companies, Inc., forming one of the largest combined financial services and property casualty insurance firms, called The St. Paul Travelers Companies, Inc. In 2007 the company changed its name to The Travelers Companies, Inc.

Travelers is the second-largest writer of commercial property insurance in the US. The company is incorporated in Minnesota, has its headquarters in New York City, and its largest office is in Hartford, Connecticut.

Founder James Batterson first encountered insurance for travelers when traveling in England. After returning to Hartford, Batterson decided to form a company that offered this insurance to American travelers.

A local banker once asked Batterson how much he would charge him for $5,000 of accidental death insurance for a trip home from the post office. Batterson’s reply was “two cents,” which the banker then paid. These two coins—the company’s first “premium”—have been kept at Traveler’s ever since.
